This is a step by step guide showing how I created a realistic media product. I used the well known film magazine “Empire” as an influence for our film “I’m not telling you my secret”. The magazine usually features and represents high profile action films such as Batman, Spiderman Transformers, Harry potter and The Hulk. As the action genre is inclusive within our film I feel that Empire is a good choice in firstly promoting and exhibiting our film product, to represent a high profile for our film as well as creating a realistically representation of a magazine cover as Empire is a current reputable brand in the film magazine industry. To create my magazine cover I firstly started with a clear image of the two main characters, this photograph was chosen as it represents the possessed female character dominating the male character which is represented through her over powering pose. I added the “Empire” logo which I retrieved from the internet then dragged onto Photoshop. I then adjusted the colour of the font and photograph to create a contrasting and interesting image. After effectively changing the colour of the photograph, I added text and additions to the magazine cover such as barcode, features and information establishing the name of the film. After doing some research on other “Empire” magazines I discovered that the “Empire” logo differed according to the film represented for example the colour would at time differ and the style of font but keeping original logo representation, so I took it upon myself to duplicate the logo to create 3D Effect on the image, darkening the second layer to make this more effective. For the final touch for the cover I edited the background by colouring it in black using the paint brush tool on Photoshop, I did this as I felt that it would depict a more realistic representation when comparing it with other “Empire” magazine covers which usually have a plain background.
Final Product Comparison I have chosen to compare our film “I’m not telling you my secret” featured on Empire magazine to a real Empire magazine featuring Spiderman. The comparison Empire cover incorporates basic traits for a magazine cover such as barcode, large font representing the “Spiderman” film, features within the magazine with inclusive photographs to lure viewer, Empire magazine title, date, year, price and finally the main image to represent the film. I incorporated all these aspects onto my magazine to create a realistic depiction. The “Spiderman” feature however attempts to encapsulate the audience by using big bold letters as well as using FREE! features inside the magazine to entice audiences to buy it. However my font is slightly more discreet as I did not want the font to take the focus away from the main image, which is the most important part in entices viewers, nevertheless establishing the name of the film by centring in the middle of the image. The spider man feature uses colours such as red to represent danger and death, black to depict devious and mystery, and white to represent innocent, all which are main characteristic within the Spiderman film i.e. mystery who Spiderman is, innocent victims saved by Spiderman and lastly danger presented by villain character. I also represented the theme of my film due to the use of colours in the image for example I used black as a background image and in the title of the film to depict mystery (the main female character being possessed) and red to represent death and mystery (main female character being possessed therefore killing her friends and leaving one particular male character alive and attempting to receive his love due to her ongoing infatuation. Spiderman is well known by viewers due to the previous television mediums it was displayed on cartoons, old films (1978), television episodes, therefore the clear display of Spiderman represented i.e. Spiderman suit, and mannerism displayed indicating his spider web, will create interest which is further emphasised by the layout i.e. bold and bright colours will evidently entice viewers, especially audiences which are familiar with his character and previous television medium. However after altering our film idea this is no longer our film cover.
I have created two different Empire covers for our film to establish our target audience of teenage males and females, by having two different genders on each cover it creates the depiction that the magazine is targeting both genders.
•After researching “Empire magazine” I discovered that all their logo does not alter but always sustains red which captures viewers attention immediately
•The date and the price was predominately located at the top left of each magazine I researched, therefore I mirrored the same method to create a realistic depiction of the well know magazine.
•The teenaged main character helps target our audience.
•I have located the title of the film at the middle of the magazine to establish that the film is the main feature of the magazine.
•The quote “the predicted best British teen film of all time” has established the film as a must see film, which is an attempt to entice are teen target audience.
•This strip which identities popular films has help in creating a realistic depiction of a Empire magazine as I cropped this particular part from a real Empire magazine.
•After researching “Empire magazine” I discovered that all their logo does not alter but always sustains red which captures viewer’s attention immediately.
•I cropped the original magazine cover so that the subjects face was the main focus of the image to viewers, which creates more of an impact to viewers.
•The date and the price was predominately located at the top left of each magazine I researched, therefore I mirrored the same method to create a realistic depiction of the well know magazine.
•I have located the title of the film at the middle of the magazine to establish that the film is the main feature of the magazine.
•Bar codes are located on every magazine, therefore this was a compulsory element to create a realistic representation.
•The use of red font establishes the thriller genre, this is also reinforced by the use of other red font on the magazine cover (the features).
•The quote “The teen movie that break the rules” I identifies the target audience for our film which are teenagers.
