Unwanted Clips

We decided to take shots of the forest from a worm’s eye viewpoint to make the audience wonder where they were. In the forest trailer we created this shot wasn’t included, however, we discussed the location and remembered we didn’t have any shots to establish the location. So we then decided to in-corporate this clip in the new trailer.

By Harira

This was the original clip we used for the first trailer. However we thought as a group that the audience would want more of a build up to the location, so we decided to use the other clip of the forest instead.

The lighting in this clip was that good. You’re unable to see the characters faces and the background is to dark to see where they are. We decided not to use the clip because it wasn’t relevant to the trailer

We did include this in the trailer however, not this clip. We thought there was no point, because we saw them putting their bags in the boot. There was no need showing them getting into the car.

This clip was used to help establish the topic of drugs in the trailer. However, we got feedback from our teacher who said we didn’t need to show this clip, because it was unnecessary to the storyline.

We were going to use this clip, but we had to limit the amount of clip shown from the house. We were also going to show them in the trailer, however, they were not significant characters.

Magazine Cover Analysis

This is a step by step guide showing how I created a realistic media product. I used the well known film magazine “Empire” as an influence for our film “I’m not telling you my secret”. The magazine usually features and represents high profile action films such as Batman, Spiderman Transformers, Harry potter and The Hulk. As the action genre is inclusive within our film I feel that Empire is a good choice in firstly promoting and exhibiting our film product, to represent a high profile for our film as well as creating a realistically representation of a magazine cover as Empire is a current reputable brand in the film magazine industry. To create my magazine cover I firstly started with a clear image of the two main characters, this photograph was chosen as it represents the possessed female character dominating the male character which is represented through her over powering pose. I added the “Empire” logo which I retrieved from the internet then dragged onto Photoshop. I then adjusted the colour of the font and photograph to create a contrasting and interesting image. After effectively changing the colour of the photograph, I added text and additions to the magazine cover such as barcode, features and information establishing the name of the film. After doing some research on other “Empire” magazines I discovered that the “Empire” logo differed according to the film represented for example the colour would at time differ and the style of font but keeping original logo representation, so I took it upon myself to duplicate the logo to create 3D Effect on the image, darkening the second layer to make this more effective. For the final touch for the cover I edited the background by colouring it in black using the paint brush tool on Photoshop, I did this as I felt that it would depict a more realistic representation when comparing it with other “Empire” magazine covers which usually have a plain background.

Final Product Comparison

I have chosen to compare our film “I’m not telling you my secret” featured on Empire magazine to a real Empire magazine featuring Spiderman. The comparison Empire cover incorporates basic traits for a magazine cover such as barcode, large font representing the “Spiderman” film, features within the magazine with inclusive photographs to lure viewer, Empire magazine title, date, year, price and finally the main image to represent the film. I incorporated all these aspects onto my magazine to create a realistic depiction. The “Spiderman” feature however attempts to encapsulate the audience by using big bold letters as well as using FREE! features inside the magazine to entice audiences to buy it. However my font is slightly more discreet as I did not want the font to take the focus away from the main image, which is the most important part in entices viewers, nevertheless establishing the name of the film by centring in the middle of the image. The spider man feature uses colours such as red to represent danger and death, black to depict devious and mystery, and white to represent innocent, all which are main characteristic within the Spiderman film i.e. mystery who Spiderman is, innocent victims saved by Spiderman and lastly danger presented by villain character. I also represented the theme of my film due to the use of colours in the image for example I used black as a background image and in the title of the film to depict mystery (the main female character being possessed) and red to represent death and mystery (main female character being possessed therefore killing her friends and leaving one particular male character alive and attempting to receive his love due to her ongoing infatuation. Spiderman is well known by viewers due to the previous television mediums it was displayed on cartoons, old films (1978), television episodes, therefore the clear display of Spiderman represented i.e. Spiderman suit, and mannerism displayed indicating his spider web, will create interest which is further emphasised by the layout i.e. bold and bright colours will evidently entice viewers, especially audiences which are familiar with his character and previous television medium. However after altering our film idea this is no longer our film cover.

I have created two different Empire covers for our film to establish our target audience of teenage males and females, by having two different genders on each cover it creates the depiction that the magazine is targeting both genders.

•After researching “Empire magazine” I discovered that all their logo does not alter but always sustains red which captures viewers attention immediately
•The date and the price was predominately located at the top left of each magazine I researched, therefore I mirrored the same method to create a realistic depiction of the well know magazine.
•The teenaged main character helps target our audience.
•I have located the title of the film at the middle of the magazine to establish that the film is the main feature of the magazine.
•The quote “the predicted best British teen film of all time” has established the film as a must see film, which is an attempt to entice are teen target audience.
•This strip which identities popular films has help in creating a realistic depiction of a Empire magazine as I cropped this particular part from a real Empire magazine.

•After researching “Empire magazine” I discovered that all their logo does not alter but always sustains red which captures viewer’s attention immediately.
•I cropped the original magazine cover so that the subjects face was the main focus of the image to viewers, which creates more of an impact to viewers.
•The date and the price was predominately located at the top left of each magazine I researched, therefore I mirrored the same method to create a realistic depiction of the well know magazine.
•I have located the title of the film at the middle of the magazine to establish that the film is the main feature of the magazine.
•Bar codes are located on every magazine, therefore this was a compulsory element to create a realistic representation.
•The use of red font establishes the thriller genre, this is also reinforced by the use of other red font on the magazine cover (the features).
•The quote “The teen movie that break the rules” I identifies the target audience for our film which are teenagers.

Props

Alcohol

Within out trailer we only used Alcohol as one of our props. We used this prop to establish that these where teenagers which would be generalised as stereotypical rebellious teenagers which are represented frequently within films. For example The trailer for the film Scream portrayed teenagers drinking which established them being typical teenagers as ell as define there characteristics and positioning within the film.

Car/Toyota Yaris

The car driving away in our trailer was used to establish the changing scenes from the party to the camping trip located in a forest location which was an attempt to make the narrative clear to the audience so that they did not think that the camping trip and the party took place in the same day.

Hannah plays Sophie- The character Sophie is a typical teenage girl who craves acceptance within social environments but is shadowed but other attractive and popular girls within the social group she has recently attempted to enter. Ever since Sophie clawed in the social group she tried all she could to seek attention and acceptance from those in the group to be seen as confident as the girls she envies in the group, Nicola and Amber. Sophie is an obsessive character and would do all she can to get her way through using manipulation and lying. Sophie has liked Benedict ever since they met as he used his warm charm to make her feel like the most special person in the world. Sophie plays the villain character within the trailer which is typically seen within a thriller genre film, this is reinforced by her characteristic as she is dark and mysterious character.

Benedict is a typical red blooded teenage boy which enjoys catching girl’s attention using his friendliness and warm and seductive charm therefore is widely liked by many females within his college. Nicolas strong and flirtatious personality has led to her constantly attaining a boyfriend at college. Her attitude is if I want something, I will get it! This is normally the case in her love life.

Amby plays Amber- the character Amber is not very independent character but instead follows the instruction from other strong characters within the friendship group, Nicola. Nicola and Amber have been best friends ever since they began high school and are known as the promiscuous girls in the group due to their constant sexual tactics. Amber has a giggly and predictable personality and can be known for being naive and vulnerable. Mise En Scene

Indoor home environment- Party Scene

Our first s scene in the trailer displays a party scene which took place in a home location. The reason we used a home location was to portray a house party environment, which connected to the overall narrative. House parties are connected with young teenagers which is the reason we used this location. For example if we located the party scene in a club ,it would not have successfully conveyed young teenagers as clubs are usually to portray young adult ie 18+ this would have effectively distorted our target audience of young teens unless we showed the character where using fake ID to enter the club. The lighting in the scene was mostly dark to establish the thriller genre however the party scene was the light-hearted part of the trailer which was reinforced by the light-hearted music.

Forest- camping scene

Forests are usually depicts a scary environment which is often used in thriller/horror films as it is abandoned, bare, mysterious and dark. The forest represented the change from light hearted teenagers having fun at a party to deathly revenge in a dark and mysterious forest creating a binary opposition. (light hearted/ intense) The forest help in making viewers more apprehensive about what would be taking place next which is something familiar in thriller genre film. Our group purposely filmed when it was dark to make scenes as daunting and intimidating to viewers. Warm clothing worm by the actors as the camping trip portrayed the cold environment in the forest. Cold weather typically replicates a thriller genre rather than hot weather, as it would subvert the meaning i.e. brightness and sunshine reinforces happiness and dark and cold represents bad and evil.

The theory of equilibrium was portrayed in the beginning of the trailer to firstly introduce audience to characters as well as help build tension. Disequilibrium began once the camping trip taking place in a forest was introduced, this was reinforced by the story establishing a scary theme (Sophie is seeking revenge), the intense music and distorted imagery (fuzzy camera). However disequilibrium was not restored, as we wanted the trailer to intrigue viewers and leave them asking questions.

Film Schedule

Girl's Questionnaire Results

1. What age are you

From this graph you can see that the majority that have taken part in the questionnaire are 15 to 18. The second age group were 12 to 15, this indicated to my group that we needed to include certain material in our trailers relating to 12 to 15 or 15 to 18 age group.

2. What genre of Film do you usually watch?

This graph helped identify what genre was most popular and how many people were interested in the thriller genre. This was interesting to see, because we were planning to combine both thriller and comedy, however we decided to choose thriller. Due to the majority of the group, wanting to do a thriller trailer.

3.What do you look for in a horror film?

This question was very important in showing what the audience look for in a horror, because you want your audience to enjoy the trailer and what to go and see it. If they find that the trailer has the same elements as every thriller trailer, this would detract people from watching our thriller. We made sure we included a mixture of these elements. For example, because suspense, action and supernaturalism, were the most popular, we would then combine all of these elements to intensify the trailer.

4. What would you want to see in a Film trailer?

The graph above shows that information on narrative and fast pace, were the most common features people would prefer to see in a trailer. However, having information on the narrative, might be difficult to incorporate in our trailer, as we planned to introduce the character, but this could change as further planning continues.

5. What would you not want to see in a film Trailer?

This helped indicate to us as a group, what our audience wouldn’t like to see in a trailer. As a group we found, that adding ‘obvious clues which reveal the narrative or twists’.

6. How are you informed when a new film is released?

The graph above shows that the most effective way of promoting films, is through trailers and the internet. This was highly important to help indicate to us as a group, if the method we were using was useful. I decided to do more in- depth research and ask our target audience why they thought trailer were the effective way of promoting a film. They said that trailers were an immediate source of information and helped you understand the genre of the film.

7. What characters do you expect to see in a horror genre film?

The figure above showed that audiences preferred to see a villain in a trailer, rather than a hero. This was interesting, as you would expect that people would prefer happy endings, rather than seeing someone dying.

8. What type of setting would you expect a horror film to be set in?

As a group the hardest decision we had to make was our location, although the question revealed that abandoned buildings were what people wanted to see in a trailer. We then decided that as a group we wanted to show something different to our audiences, so we choose the forest as our location. Overall, we were able to see what the results were from our target audience and what ideas and themes we should put into our trailer. The point of the graphs was to see visually what our audience wanted from our trailer, and what the strongest votes were.

Boy's Questionnaire Results

1. What age group are you?

The graph shows that we aimed our questionnaire at the target audience we wanted which was 15 to 18. As most horror have content appropriate for that age group. Horrors can also have an older audience but our film trailer has themes and issues that a teenage audience would relate to and understands better than an older audience.

2. What genre of film do you usually watch?

Our group thought that it would be good to find out what genre our target audience watches. In the graph the horror genre is the third highest choice made by our target audience. Comedy was the highest however; our group felt that comedy would have been a very challenging genre to do as senses of humour are very different. With horror we felt that it would be easier to incorporate different genres such as action and thriller.

3. What do you look for in a horror film?

This question was quite important, as it gives our group an idea of what they’re expecting from our film. The highest choice which was tension, which is what we should focus on, as tension will make our trailer stronger and please our target audience. We will also try to incorporate the other themes as many of our target audience choose them, such as suspense and action.

4. What would you want to see in a film trailer?

This question helps us to choose whether our target audience would enjoy a character or narrative based trailer. The highest was introduction to the character. We had already chosen our story which could have been narrative or character based, and now looking at this graph we will make the introduction more about the characters which we feel would work better for our themes. Also another of the highest chosen themes was clues to the film, which we feel is need for a trailer as we want to make it clear to the audience about what are films about.

5. What would you not want to see in a film trailer?

This was important as we wanted to know not what to do and what are target audience wouldn’t enjoy to watch. We want our target audience to enjoy and want to see the film after watching our trailer. The one highest theme’s chosen were clues which reveal the narrative or twist, we have to make sure we don’t do this and keep mystery to our trailer.

6. How are you informed when a new film is released?

This question helps identify what mediums, how and where our target audience consume information about newly released films. The highest medium chosen was trailers, which is the main medium we are using.

7. Do you think trailers are the most effective form of advertising?

This graph shows that our target audience thought that trailers were the most effective form of advertising, which also was shown in the graph above. Our main medium for our film is a trailer so we will be able to meet our target audience’s expectations.

8. What characters do you expect to see in a horror genre film?

This question was to give us an idea of what characters we would use in our trailer, the character which was chosen the most was a villain, in our trailer we are going to put a villain in are trailer however try and put mystery to who the villain is, as this relates questions, 4 and 5.

9. What type of setting would you expect a horror film to be set in?

This question was for our benefit, we had chosen are set as a forest, but we wanted to see what our target audience would expect to see. The most chosen location was an abandoned building; however this would be a hard set to find. The second highest was a school location; however we felt that this would be an easy option and so we are sticking to our forest location.
